Things to Do

Miles of mixed-use trails ascend the bluffs of Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve, providing mesmerizing views over the bay. The 135-acre Nature Preserve adjoins the 752-acre Upper Newport Ecological Reserve in a continuous protected landscape totaling over 1000 acres. This is one of the best spots in North America for bird watching. More than 35,000 migratory birds can be seen here during the winter, including numerous rare and endangered species. The Upper Newport Bay Muth Interpretive Center is an educational facility featuring reptile and amphibian exhibits and lots of useful information for getting the most out of your exploration of the Nature Preserve.
 
The Balboa Peninsula stretches for three miles in the azure ocean waters off the coast of Newport Beach. The north side of the peninsula offers great harbor views, while the south side features a sandy ocean beachfront. This hugely popular destination has seafood restaurants, beach bars, surf schools, and a ferry connecting the peninsula to Balboa Island. Activities available on the island include fishing at Balboa Pier, relaxing amid the dunes on Balboa Peninsula Beach, and surfing dramatic 30-foot waves at The WedgeBalboa Peninsula Park features fire pits and a playground on the sand. Right next to the prestigious community of Newport Coast, the 3,936-acre Crystal Cove State Park has a gorgeous landscape with inland chaparral canyons and 3.2 miles of unbroken Pacific coastline.
